SAMMAEL ON CORVEX

Deathhammer40k Warhammer 40,000 Commission Painted and Built Wargaming Miniatures Sammael on Corvex Dark Angels Ravenwing

Hi, Ben here! Here’s my recently completed Sammael – Master of the Ravenwing on his Corvex jetbike. Sammael is a really solid HQ if you’re using him along with other Ravenwing or even on his own. He has a tonne of special rules that really make him a powerful character but he is 200 points, which makes him one of the most expensive HQ’s in the Dark Angels codex. I recently purchased a metal Sammael model from eBay. I stripped the paint off him and re-painted him so he can be used with my Ravenwing that I use quite a lot in my battles with my Dark Angels. Below you can see the model before I stripped it and the model after I’ve re-painted it. I’m really satisfied with the result and can’t wait to use him in games!

I had a finecast version of the model from a few years ago, but, as we all know, Citadel Finecast isn’t the greatest for models that have protruding elements such as Sammael’s Ravensword and his robe. These kept snapping off and bending which was really annoying. So I decided to purchase the metal version from eBay, which has turned out great. The Ravensword and the robe don’t bend anymore even in my army case that’s full of Dark Angels.

Overall Sammael is a great miniature to paint as there are a lot of different textures such as cloth, armour and the engine section of the jetbike. It didn’t take too long to paint either which is always a good thing.

I think I’m mainly going to use him with a large group of Ravenwing Bikes or Ravenwing Black Knights to make the most of his Warlord Trait which is Rapid Manoeuvre, which gives him and his unit an extra 3″ to their turbo boost and charges! This would be great for grabbing objectives and getting your Ravenwing models in your enemies face even quicker, and getting those deepstriking Deathwing even closer too! He also has the Skilled Rider special rule, giving him a 3+ Jink save which can be re-rolled thanks to the Ravenwing special rule! Below you can see some of the main features of the model.

Corvex Raven

The Raven on the front of Corvex is one of the most prominent features of the model and takes up the front of the jetbike. It’s looks great when it’s all highlighted and really brings out the feathers and wings.

Ravenwing Tome

The Ravenwing tome is another element that takes prominence on the model. Mounted in front of the jetbike controls, this book looks great and gives a great narrative element to the miniature.

Sammael Himself

Sammael himself has some great features, from his flowing robe to his shoulder pads and Ravensword. There’s a lot of detail on this miniature that can stand out really well from the black armour.

Below you can see Sammael’s wargear and special rules.

Related Rules

Eternal Warrior: Immune to Instant Death (BRB p35)

Fearless: Automatically pass all Pinning-, Fear- and Regroup tests and Morale checks. Cannot go to ground or use the “Our Weapons Are Useless” rule. (BRB 2014 p163)

Gets Hot: Each roll of 1 To Hit causes a Wound to the firing model (armor and invulnerable saves may be taken but the Wound cannot be allocated to any other model.) Vehicles instead have a 50% chance to take a glancing hit. Blast weapons instead roll a D6 before firing; upon rolling a 1 they take the hit described above instead of firing. (BRB 2014 p164)

Grim Resolve: A model with this rule has Stubborn and therefore ignores negative Leadership modifiers. In addition they may never choose to fail a morale check. Allows overwatch to be resolved at BS2. (Codex: Dark Angels 2015 p148)

Hatred (Chaos Space Marines): Reroll all misses in the first round of each close combat.

Hit & Run: May take an Initiative test at the end of the assault phase, if successful choose a direction and roll 3D6, move that far ignoring all models in base contact. If this would take you within 1″ of another unit, stop 1″ away. Ignore Difficult Terrain, but make Dangerous Terrain tests normally. Enemy units left makes an immediate D6″ consolidation. (BRB 2014 p165)

Independent Character: Independent Characters can join and leave other units that do not contain vehicles or Monstrous Creatures. Independent Characters may join with other Independent Characters to form a powerful multi-character unit. An Independent Character counts as having joined a unit if he ends his move within 2″ of them, if he is within 2″ of more than one unit you must declare which unit he is joining. An Independent Character may leave his unit and join another one in the same movement phase, but he may not join a unit in any other phase. An Independent Character cannot join or leave a unit that is locked in combat or falling back, he also may not leave a unit that has gone to ground.

Look out Sir is taken on a 2+.

If a unit with an Independent Character in it has fallen to below 25% strength they test as if they had 25% remaining.

When an Independent Character joins a unit he looses all special rules that the unit does not have unless the rule says it applies to the unit (e.g. Stubborn) and vice versa.

If the unit is suffering from ongoing effects (eg blind, soul blaze) and the Independent Character leaves the unit, he is still suffering from those effects as well, but they to not transfer to a new unit he joins. (BRB 2014 p166)

Jink: When a unit with any models with the Jink special rule is selected as a target for a shooting attack, you may declare that it will Jink. The decision must be made before any To Hit rolls have been made. If the unit Jinks, all models in the unit with this special rule gain a 4 + cover save until the start of their next Movement phase, but they can only fire Snap Shots until the end of their next turn. (BRB 2014)

Master-crafted: May re-roll one hit per subphase (BRB 2014)

Outflank: When this unit arrives from reserves roll a die. On a 1 or 2 it comes in on your left, on a 3 or 4 it comes in on your right and on a 5 or 6 you choose right or left. (BRB 2014 p168)

Ravenwing: Reroll failed cover saves when jinking. (Codex: Dark Angels 2015 p148)

Scout: After all deployment but before first turn a unit with this rule may redeploy. If it is Infantry, Artillery, Walker or a Monstrous Creature it may redeploy anywhere within 6″, all other unit types may redeploy anywhere within 12″, and all must remain 12″ away from enemy units.
Any unit that redeploys with this rule may not charge on the first turn. If held in reserve, the unit gains Outflank. (BRB 2014 p171)

Skilled Rider: Automatically passes Dangerous Terrain and receives +1 to Jink saves (BRB 2014 p171)

Swift Vengeance: Sammael may fire up to two weapons.

Twin Linked: Reroll failed to-hit. Blast weapons may reroll all scatter die. Templates reroll to-wound. (BRB 2014 p169)

Warlord Trait: Rapid Manoeuvre: Your Warlord and his unit can add 3″ to their maximum move distance when they move Flat Out, Turbo-boost, Run and make charge moves. (Codex: Dark Angels 2015 p148)

Deathhammer40k Warhammer 40,000 Commission Painted and Built Wargaming Miniatures Sammael on Corvex Dark Angels Ravenwing 3

Sammael has some really solid stats being WS6, BS5, T5, I5 and A3, he is also pretty tough, he does have a 3+ armour save which isn’t too bad, but with a 4+ invulnerable save and the option to jink with a 3+ reroll, this really makes him a tough unit to kill by shooting at him, especially as he has Eternal Warrior too! Sammael is equipped with a Twin Linked Storm Bolter and a Plasma Cannon which he can fire both of in the same shooting phase which is a nice bonus. He also has a nasty edge in combat with his Ravensword, which is Master Crafted and AP2. This weapon will ignore all armour in combat and will let you reroll one failed to hit roll in combat. The only downside is that Sammael is only strength 4 which is the only down side when using this weapon. Getting the hits against a unit shouldn’t be a problem with Sammael being WS6 and having a Master Crafted weapon, but the to wound rolls is where you need the most luck! If it does would it can do a lot of damage. One way to get around this would be to cast Hammerhand on Sammael and his unit with a Librarian making them +2 strength which would make Sammael strength 6 with an AP2 weapon! This would slice it’s way through any infantry armour that your enemy throws at you.

Thanks to Sammael being on the Corvex jetbike, it makes him relentless too. This means that Sammael can fire his Plasma Cannon into a unit and then charge the remaining models even though the Plasma Cannon is a heavy weapon. Sammael could easily wipe out a unit of 5 Chaos Terminators for example; by firing the Plasma Cannon first, you could kill on average about 3 of them if you get a direct hit, then you can charge and use the Ravensword to mop up the rest of them before they attack back thanks to Sammael being I5. Don’t forget he can +3″ to his charge, thanks to his Warlord Trait too! His makes a lot more reliable when charging, as the minimum distance he can roll to charge is 5″! Thanks to his speed, you should be able to make charges nearly all the time.

You can also try surprising the enemy by Outflank thanks to him and other Ravenwing having the Scout special rule. This could be a deadly tactic if he was with a unit of Black Knights! Outflanking the enemy and firing the Black Knights Plasma Talons and Sammael’s Plasma Cannon into the flanks of an enemy squad or an armoured target would make very short work of them. Thanks to the Ravenwing being very fast, it doesn’t really matter if they are stranded on a flank as they can quickly reposition themselves and harass the enemy lines.

Deathhammer40k Warhammer 40,000 Commission Painted and Built Wargaming Miniatures Sammael on Corvex Dark Angels Ravenwing Corvex Front

If you’re interested in using Ravenwing in your army, make sure you try out the Ravenwing Strikeforce detachment. With the Speed of the Ravenwing special rule, if you turbo boost in the first turn, or the turn the detachment arrives from reserve, your Ravenwing models count as jinking in the enemies next shooting phase. Once your opponent has had their turn you can still fire your weapons normally even though your Ravenwing counted as jinking!  This is a very powerful rule when you’re taking strong shooting Ravenwing units such as Black Knights, Attack Bikes and Land Speeder Vengeances. It’s only for one turn but it can make all the difference and keeps the firepower pouring into your enemy. If you’re using this detachment make sure you do you Scout moves to make sure that you get your weapons as close to the enemy as possible, making the most out of Plasma Talons and the Twin Linked Boltguns on your normal Ravenwing Bikers.

Keeping your Ravenwing alive is key for any battle. If you’re going up against a strong shooting army, a good option to take would be a Ravenwing Dark Shroud! The Dark Shroud gives +1 cover save to any models within 6″ of it. This means your normal Ravenwing Bikers will be getting a 3+ rerollable jink save, and your Black Knights and Sammael will be getting a 2+ rerollable jink save! 4+ for jinking, +1 for skilled rider and +1 for the Dark Shroud! This makes your Ravenwing super hard to kill from shooting attacks and really puts the pressure on your enemy when they see a whole force of Ravenwing coming straight towards them without taking many casualties!

Hopefully this gives you an insight in how I’m going to use this Sammael on Corvex and also given you ideas of how to use yours. Keep a look out for him in future battles by checking out our Instagram account!
