Deathhammer40k Warhammer 40,000 Commission Painted and Built Wargaming Miniatures Forges of Mars battle mat and scenery

In this blog post, we will be talking about our partners and the fantastic battle mats and scenery that they produce for Warhammer 40,000 and a whole range of other gaming platforms. We contacted and purchased one of their mousepad Forges of Mars battle mats, as we were in desperate need of updating our tabletop to make our games and battle reports look more professional and thematic. Matous at was very friendly and couldn’t help us enough with finding a mat that would set off our battles nicely. We came across when searching for battle mats online, and their mats really stood out due to the level of detail and colour.

The Forges of Mars battle mat comes in the size of 6′ x 4′ and the artist who created the design of the mat, Yohann Schepacz, is the concept artist for Deus Ex and Rise of the Tomb Raider video games. only have limited stock available of these mats and they’re not available to buy in wargames shops, so make sure you don’t miss out on this great mat, before they run out of stock! The mat has a rubber base, like that of a mousepad and has a highly detailed print on the surface of a Mars base that would be perfect for any Adeptus Mechanicus players out there. We will take a detailed look at the mat in the sections below.

The picture above was taken from a battle we had between the Adeptus Mechanicus and Tyranids. As you can see the mat is perfectly suited for the Adeptus Mechanicus due to the rugged Mars landscape with its craters and rocky pathways and sections. These arid sections of the mat give a great contrast to the industrial/mechanical parts of the Forges of Mars mat.

The mat is well balanced between these two types of landscape and makes it a great mat to play attacker and defender style scenarios. In the picture above, you can see the Adeptus Mechanicus are defending their industrial sector whilst the Tyranids are invading from the edges of the Mars landscape.

Here, you can see how the mat is laid out. It has an equal amount of Mars landscape and industrial sections that contrast well together, as well as the bright/vivid colours that will make your battles look amazing.

Here is a section of the industrial sector that shows a loading bay with its doors open, ready to bring up a tank from below the Mars base. A great design element that’s perfect for using as an objective.

The battle mat has a rubber base to make sure the that it doesn’t slide around whilst it’s being used. The mat also comes in a very handy carry case for easy transportation.

Here are some of the main features of the Forges of Mars battle mat:

– Lays perfectly flat, no dog ears
– 2mm thick durable rubber base
– Weight 3.5 kg
– Anti slip
– Water proof
– No light reflections
– Softens rolling dice sounds
– Smooths model movement
– Soft protection for dropped models
– Adds an amazing cinematic effect to your games
– Makes your table into real battlefield
– Battle bag included

In the section below you will see a selection of images that were taken from our Adeptus Mechanicus vs Tyranids battle report. We used this mat perfectly to suit the narrative that we wanted to set for the battle. The Tyranid force would be invading from the outskirts of the arid Mars landscape while the Adeptus Mechanicus force was deployed to defend their forge world. In the image below you can see the Tyranid force moving across the dusty, barren landscape in close proximity to the Adeptus Mechanicus’ industrial sector. The orangey/red colour of the Mars landscape really makes miniatures visually stand off the mat, creating a lovely contrast of colours and tones.

The mat does somewhat limit you to where you can suitably place terrain and make it look part of the mat, and the industrial section looks a lot more condensed than the Mars landscape part but this could be countered with some different terrain that can be used out in the open, such as pipelines and containers that don’t necessarily need to be in the industrial part. In the image below you can see an Adeptus Mechanicus force deployed in the industrial complex. This section of the mat really suits the Adeptus Mechanicus’ ancient technological style and the colours used in the palette of the Mars forge world.

In the industrial sector of the mat, there are different types of details such as loading bays and hazard marked doors that would be suitable for placing objectives near to. In the image below we used a small pylon to represent an important objective with the hazard markings on the ground helping to represent the significance of the area. The battle mat has similar areas like this in other places so that you can spread your points of interest across the battlefield.

At the opposite end of the mat to where the main industrial sector is there are a number of circular markers on the ground that help to break up the Mars landscape which you can see in the image below. These large circular markings also make a nice contrast to the rigid and angular layout of the industrial sector. These markings are great for objectives too as they help to create a visual marker around any scenery that you wish to put there. The Sector Mechanicus scenery from Games Workshop would be perfect for this area due to their circular footprint. In the image below you can see a squad of Sicarian Infiltrators attacking a brood of Tyranid Warriors next to some pipelines on the edge of the Mars landscape.
