CRIMSON FISTS STORMTALON

Deathhammer40k Warhammer 40,000 Commission Painted and Built Wargaming Miniatures Crimson Fists Stormtalon Blog Post

Hi, Ben here! Here’s my recently completed Crimson Fists Stormtalon. This Stormtalon will provide some much needed air support to my Crimson Fists army and hopefully be able to take out other enemy flyers without me having to invest my ground targets or Devastators with Flak Missles into shooting at an incoming flyer. I’ve not glued in the secondary weapons, so I can choose between a Twin Linked Lascannon, Typhoon Missle Launcher or Skyhammer Missles depending on the enemy that I’m facing.

I’m really happy with how the paint job came out and can’t wait to use it in upcoming battles. I didn’t add too much red onto the Stormtalon as I prefer to have my Crimson Fist vehicles mostly Kantor Blue with Crimson Fists decals. Below, you can see some of the main features of the Stormtalon.

Weathering

I’ve added some weathering effects to the Stormtalon to give that battle worn look that I use on most of my vehicles. This gives the Stormtalon a more realistic feel.

Weapons

I didn’t glue in the secondary weapons on the Stormtalon so that I can choose what weapon I use depending on what enemy I’m facing. This gives the Stormtalon great versatility.

Transparent Canopy

I’ve kept the Stormtalon canopy transparent so that the cockpit and pilot are visible. I prefer keeping it transparent as it helps add that extra bit of realism rather than being painted.

Assault Cannon

Assault Cannons are a great versatile weapon that can destroy any target. This Stormtalon will give support to my ground units and have anti air capabilities too.

Decals

I’ve added Crimson Fists decals to the wings and the sides of the Stormtalon. I like to keep my Crimson Fists mostly their dark blue colour with a few accents of crimson.

Base

I added Crimson Fist details to the base as well as Tau details too. This gives the model narrative and looks like it’s flying over a battle between Crimson Fists and a Tau Empire force.

Here you can see various different angles of the Stormtalon to give you a feel of the model from all angles. I think I’ll mostly be using the Stormtalon with the Twin Linked Assault Cannon and Typhoon Missle Launcher configuration. The Typhoon Missles give the option for going after armoured targets with the Krak Missles, monstrous creatures with Krak Missles or Infantry targets with the Frag Missles. With the help of the Strafing Run special rule, the Stormtalon will be very accurate when firing at targets on the ground.

Please see below the special rules and weapon load outs that I’ll be using on my Crimson Fists Stormtalon. Hopefully these give you an idea of how I’m going to be using the Stormtalon in my Crimson Fists army and also gives you an idea of how to use yours too.

Stormtalon Special Rules

Strafing Run: When shooting Assault, Heavy, Rapid Fire or Salvo weapons at Artillery, Beasts, Bikes, Cavalry, Infantry, Monstrous Creatures and vehicles without the Flyer or Skimmer type, this vehicle has +1 Ballistic Skill.

Vectored Afterburners: When Zooming, a Stormtalon Gunship canmove an additional 6″ if it moves Flat Out. When Hovering, a Stormtalon Gunship receives +1 to its Jink cover saves (other cover saves are unaffected).

Ceramite Plating: Melta weapons do not roll an extra D6 penetration when shooting from half range or less.

Twin Linked Assault Cannon and Skyhammer Missles – 115 Points

Name Range Strength AP Type Ref
Assault Cannon 24″ 6 4 Heavy 4, Rending Warhammer 40,00: The Rules p176
Skyhammer Missle Launcher 60″ 7 4 Heavy 3

This option is one of the cheapest load-outs for the Stormtalon but is a great all round choice. It doesn’t quite pack a powerful punch but it makes up for it with the amount of shots it can put out in one shooting phase. Altogether, this option fires out 7 shots that are all AP4 (4 shots from the Twin Linked Assault Cannon and 3 from the Skyhammer Missle Launcher) which is great for mopping up infantry squads, monstrous creatures and even light vehicles. Thanks to the Strafing Run special rule, the Stormtalon will be able to lay down an accurate volley of fire hitting on 2+ with the Skyhammer Missles and 2+ rerolling with the Twin Linked Assault Cannon against most ground targets. This makes the Stormtalon a very reliable fire base. All in all, this is a solid choice that is great for it’s points value.

Twin Linked Assault Cannon and Typhoon Missle Launcher – 130 Points

Name Range Strength AP Type Ref
Assault Cannon 24″ 6 4 Heavy 4, Rending Warhammer 40,00: The Rules p176
Typhoon Missile Launcher (Frag) 48″ 4 6 Heavy 2, Blast Codex Adeptus Astartes p193
Typhoon Missile Launcher (Krak) 48″ 8 3 Heavy 2 Codex Adeptus Astartes p193

This weapon load-out is probably the choice I’ll be taking most often. It’s able to take a a wide variety of targets such as infantry, monstrous creatures and light and medium armoured vehicles. The Typhoon Missles are a great versitile weapon that packs the punch in this configuration thanks to the Strength 8, AP3 Krak Missles that are perfect for taking down those tough targets such as Tyranid Carnifexes, Hive Tyrants, Tervigons, Chaos Daemon Princes and even Tau Empire Ghostkeels. The Krak Missles are also ideal for taking down enemy flyers as the Krak shots will mostly be glancing other flyers on a 3+. The Typhoons Frag Missles are great for taking out light and even well armoured infantry if you can get enough hits on the target, especially with 2 blasts. Make sure you centre the Frag blast over as many enemy models as you can to maximise the potential damage the Frag Missles can do. The Twin Linked Assault Cannon can help mop up any remaining infantry and can even take off those last hull points on vehicles thanks to the Rending special rule too. All in all, a really great choice that has a sting against tough targets with Krak Missles and the amount of potential hits you can get with the Frag Missles against infantry targets. This is the most expensive option for the Stormtalon to take but it has great potential for being good at taking out most types of targets, thanks to the different firing modes the Typhoon Missle Launcher has.

Twin Linked Assault Cannon and Twin Linked Lascannon – 125 Points

Name Range Strength AP Type Ref
Assault Cannon 24″ 6 4 Heavy 4, Rending Warhammer 40,00: The Rules p176
Lascannon 48″ 9 2 Heavy 1 Warhammer 40,00: The Rules p177

This configuration packs the most punch against vehicles thanks to it’s Twin Linked Lascannon that’s Strength 9, AP2. I can see me taking this option only when I’ll be facing a very mechanised army with lots of transports and heavy support vehicles. I don’t think I’ll be using this option much but at least the option is there for when I need it. Against most ground vehicles the Twin Linked Lascannon will be hitting on a 2+ re-rolling, which is great due the it only being Heavy 1. It will likely hit all of the time and the Strength 9 will help punch through armoured vehicles such as Eldar Wave Serpents, Dark Eldar Raiders, Tau Devilfishes and even Necron Ghost Arks. The Twin Linked Assault Cannon will also help taking off remaining hull points if you can get lucky with the Rending hits. I think this option is great for anti-tank and flyer duties but I’d rather take the Typhoon Missles Launchers, as this load-out isn’t as good at taking out infantry as the Typhoon Missles or the Skyhammer Missles.

Hopefully this gives you an insight in how I’m going to use this Stormtalon and given you ideas of how to use yours. Keep a look out for it in future battles by checking out our Instagram account!
