After we’d completed the first project for Thomas he then wanted us to start working on another. He was interested in having a small Crimson Fists force painting and building, a great starting point for any army. The project consisted of a Captain, Devastators, Vanguard Veterans, Assault Terminators, a Rhino/Razorback and a Stormtalon. Thomas wanted to have the option of the Rhino to have interchangeable parts so it could be either a Rhino or a Razorback. He also wanted the option to use all of the weapon options interchangeable on the Stormtalon too, to give the model more flexibility based on the armies that he plays against.
Crimson Fists Rhino/Razorback
Thomas wanted the Rhino to have an interchangeable top hatch so that we could use the Rhino as a Razorback too. This gives the model more flexibility and is able to change which transport he wants to use based on what army he’s playing against. It also gives more value to your model and makes the most of the components in the kit. We suggested to Thomas that having a Forgeworld Door Kit would be an excellent idea, as they add a lot more detail to the model, which he was happy to have. Below you can see the detail on the Crimson Fists Door kit from Forgeworld.
The front panel of the door kit has a fist holding a lightning bolt and also has the Imperium Eagle as well as a small purity seal and parchment. The Forgeworld door kits are made from resin and sometimes need green stuff adding to fill any gaps.
The side doors also have a large fist in a roundel along with an Imperial Eagle underneath. The doors did need some filing to make them fit into the door gap but it wasn’t too much hassle. It’s best to file a small amount at a time so you can get a precise fit.
We’re really happy with how the Rhino/Razorback came out, and it looks great in the deep blue and red colour scheme of the Crimson Fists. The Forgeworld door kits add a great level of depth to the tank and we also adding some battle/weathering damage to the tank to give it that realistic effect so that it looks like it’s been through a fierce campaign.
CRIMSON FISTS CAPTAIN
Thomas wanted a Captain in his force that summed up the Crimson Fists chapter. To capture the ethos of the Crimson Fists we used specific wargear to get this across. Firstly we had to give him a nice big crimson Power Fist, this alone shows which chapter he’s from. We also gave him a Storm Bolter to symbolise the Crimson Fists being experts in Bolter weaponry. The stance of the Captain makes it look as though he’s standing firm and ready to take on any incoming enemies, this shows the stubbornness of the Crimson Fists in battle and the refusal of defeat, no matter what the cost.
The Captain was made from parts of the Space Marine Captain kit and the Space Marine Sternguard kit. These are great kits as almost most of the parts are interchangeable which can be used on any Space Marine. The body, back pack and Storm Bolter are from the Captain kit and the Power Fist, head and shoulder plates are from the Sternguard kit.
When the Captain is surrounded by his bodyguard he looks like a force to be reckoned with. The Assault Terminators are ready to take the heaviest of firepower and attacks with their Storm Shields in order to protect their leader. This unit would be a very tough unit to take down in a game due to their reliable invulnerable save and 2+ armour saves.
CRIMSON FISTS TERMINATORS
Thomas wanted the Assault Terminators to be a hard hitting and durable unit, able to survive a whole battle and soak up enemy firepower. We gave the Assault Terminators Thunder Hammers and Storm Shields to give them the durability and combat power that Thomas wanted. The Terminators have the Crimson Fists Terminator Shoulder kit to give them that extra level of detail and depth. We also added a lightning effect to the Thunder Hammers to make them look as though they were cracking with energy, ready to dispatch the enemies of the Imperium.
We’re really happy with how the Terminators came out and the colour scheme suits them really well. We also added a glowing effect around the Terminator’s helmet lenses to give the impression that lighting from inside the helmets was being reflected on the dark blue armour. The bases were painted in Steel Legion Drab and dry brushed with Zemesi Desert and Screaming Skull. The brown bases give a great contrast to the dark blue and red of the Assault Terminators armour.
CRIMSON FISTS VANGUARD VETERANS
Thomas wanted a variety of weapons of the Vanguard Veterans so he is able to deal with different threats in his battles. The Thunder Hammers would work against heavily armoured targets whilst the Lightning Claws and Power Sword would shred through well-armoured infantry. The kit has a great variety of weapons and options so you can make a diverse unit with lots of personality.
The Vanguard Veterans kit has some great details on the armour and shoulder plates that make each model unique in their own way. Most of the weapon options are one of a kind and have differing details on them so that they don’t all look the same. We added grass tufts to the bases of the Vanguard to give them a level of depth so that they weren’t just flat desert bases.
The unit looks like they’re ready to jump into action and cut through the ranks of the enemy with their specialist combat weapons. The Vanguard would also be ideal with a Captain with a Jump Pack, able to jump from ruin to ruin and exploit the enemies weak spots, hitting hard and fast.
CRIMSON FISTS DEVASTATORS
Thomas wanted his Devastator squad to have the heaviest firepower they can take in the form of Lascannons, making the most of the Crimson Fists Tank Hunting special rules. No armoured target on the battlefield is safe from these tank busting specialists. We used parts from our spare bits collection as the Devastator squad kit only comes with 2 Lascannons.
The Sergeant has a crouched pose and gives the impression that he’s making way for his squad to fire around him and giving out orders. The Crimson Fists symbol was freehand painted on the shoulder plates, as the Crimson Fists transfers don’t fit on the shoulder that well and can come off the models quite easily. We thought this would be the best option as we wanted the models to look the best they possibly can.
CRIMSON FISTS STORMTALON
The Crimson Fists Stormtalon is able to interchange all of its weapon options as shown in the image below. This gives Thomas the option to choose his weapon based on which army he’s playing against, giving the model flexibility and making it more value for money. We added battle/weathering damage like we did on the Rhino/Razorback to give the flyer a more realistic look.
We painted all of the cockpit and dials to give the Stormtalon that extra level of depth and added glowing effects around them. We’re really pleased with how the model came out and it looks as though it’s fought through the toughest of dog fights.
On the side of the weapon casing, we used the Crimson Fists vehicle transfers so that people can see which chapter the flyer is from. There are also smaller Crimson Fists transfers towards the tail end of the Stormtalon. We added PVA glue on all of the lenses and dials so that they had a smooth glossy effect, adding more realism and texture to the model. We also used PVA glue to stick the glass canopy to the cockpit too as super glue can often cloud up the inside of the glass part and ruin the look of the model.
Here's what Thomas said about our service
“This is an expensive hobby, and I now have loads of miniatures and a bit of a storage problem.. but even if I have to sell some stuff, there is no way I am letting go of my Deathhammer40k miniatures! They are the centrepiece of my armies and the envy of my friends!
I have been painting for some years now… but my work does not come close to the level of the work of Ben and the team. Take a look at the photos, the images speak for themselves Thanks again Ben!”
We’d like to thank Thomas for his support and let us being able to work on a great project. He had a great time building and painting these Crimson Fists and we hope Thomas has an even better time playing them in his battles. Our favourite models from this project would be the Assault Terminators, they look like they’re invincible with their wall of Storm Sheilds!
